3 Mistakes to Avoid When You Are Upgrading Your Home to LED Lighting

If you are looking to reduce your home’s carbon footprint, upgrading to sustainable lighting is probably high on your list of priorities. However, LEDs are very different to other lightbulbs on the market, so it’s easy to go wrong on this seemingly simple project. Here are some common mistakes and how to avoid them, from LED light installation specialists accredited under the Victorian energy upgrade program

Mistake 1 – Replacing Watt for Watt

Usually, you’d replace a 20W lightbulb with another 20W lightbulb – but this doesn’t work with LEDs because they use far less watts than any other bulb. Replacing a lightbulb this way is going to light your house up like a stadium!

Instead, look at the lumen per watt measurement on each bulb before you buy. This tells you how much light the bulb outputs for the watts consumed. A 6W LED bulb can easily replace a 40W incandescent, 29W halogen or 8-9W compact fluorescent.

Mistake 2 – Not Considering Colour Rendering Index (CRI)

A critical part of an LED light installation is considering the effect of the lighting in different rooms or according to personal preferences. This is because LEDS aren’t just sustainable lighting – they’re more versatile in terms of colour too. It is very important to understand the CRI in order to find the right colour lights for your home.

Colour is measured in Kelvin to make comparison easier between your old and new bulbs, with warmer more orange and yellow lighting at the 1,500-2,700 range, neutral colours around the 3,000 range, and colder, bright white lights at the 5,000 range.

Mistake 3 – Choosing Price Over Quality

LED lightbulbs are more expensive because of the way they are designed and the fact that they have tiny inverters in the bulb so that they can run on your home’s electrical system. Cheap LEDs are everywhere and the fact is that most of them are very poor quality. When you are investing in sustainable lighting, the last thing you want is to be throwing out bulbs constantly because they fail!

Remember to go with a good brand and bulb that is well-reviewed, and the extra cost will be offset by the many, many years of low energy use you’ll get out of them. Also, if you live in Victoria, you can offset this cost by getting a rebate for your LED light installation – all you have to do is use an accredited provider under the Victorian energy upgrade program.
