Fact #1 – LED Lightbulbs are Technological Innovations 

The LED is also known as a light-emitting diode, and the team of scientists who were behind the invention of these lightbulbs in the 1990s won the Nobel Prize in physics for their innovation. The bulbs are a type of solid-state lighting that utilises a semiconductor to convert electricity into light, technology that allows them to use 85% less energy than typical halogen bulbs. It’s this ability to provide great lighting using a fraction of the energy that has made them part of the Victorian Energy Upgrade Program. 

Fact #2 – They’re Versatile 

LED lightbulbs can be used in almost any lighting application, from residential lighting (task lighting, security lighting, room lighting, and bulbs for lamps) and commercial lighting (office lighting, display cases, and traffic lights) to product-specific lighting (car headlights, Christmas lights, etc.) They come in a huge range of colour and size options for any application you can think of! 

Fact #3 – They Contain No Mercury 

LED lightbulbs contain zero mercury or greenhouse gasses, which makes them an environmentally safe choice, in line with the aims of the Victorian Energy Upgrade Program. This makes them safer to manufacture than other lightbulbs, and also makes them fully and easily recyclable.

Ever touched a halogen, fluorescent or incandescent bulb while it’s on? If you’re not careful, you can easily burn yourself! This is because so much of the energy they draw on is converted into heat – up to 80%. This not only makes other lightbulbs wasteful, it also presents a fire risk. Hot bulbs can even damage fittings as well as bleaching artworks and other delicate items over time. Warm Light vs. Cool Light vs. Daylight

One of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint is to choose an LED light installation for your home through the Victorian Energy Upgrades Program . Getting the right LEDs is an important part of this process – so what do the terms “cool white”, “warm light”, and “daylight” mean?  Colour Temperatures for Lightbulbs  Light colour temperature – the colour of the light that the bulb emits – is measured in units called Kelvin (K). The higher the number in Kelvin, the whiter and crisper the light, while lower numbers give a warmer, yellow glow.  To make it simpler, LED lightbulb manufacturers give their range of bulbs different names to help describe the light they emit. Their high Kelvin bulbs will be called “cool white” because this very white light has an almost blue tone to it. The low Kelvin bulbs will generally be called “warm white” because they tend to have yellow tones.
